Venue: The Grand Royale, 51-61 South St, Granville NSW

Date: 30/10/2015

==========

 We are holding our second Fundraising Dinner this year to raise fund to support the building of This Life Children Centre, a drop-in centre for social activities and space for critically vulnerable orphaned children in need of immediate help.

.

Background: War In Northern Uganda

The long journey of pain, loss and trauma started over 20 years ago when the Lord Resistance Army rebels led by Joseph Kony began his war in Northern Uganda. The LRA Rebels operated in the region between 1987 and 2006, spreading fear and terror throughout the North and North-Eastern Uganda. They tortured, killed and abducted over 20,000 children, recruiting them into Child Soldiers. More than 1.5 million people were driven into Internally Displaced Persons` Camps (IDPs); which basically became a death trap for many.

Project: Rebuilding Northern Uganda

Mercy Akongo, the Founder of This Life Foundation spent over two years working with displaced people within the Camps and the rural Northern Uganda picking up 18 children who she has then been supporting personally since 2008. Through This Life Foundation, she hopes that more children will be supported to deal with the transition within the IDPs and villages as people move back to their original homes where they were driven away from over 20 years ago. This Life Foundation supports the kids through their Volunteer Mentors who play a vital role in their daily lives. The foundation also sponsors kids` education and supports children`s health needs.

This Life Children Centre

The Children Centre will be a drop in space for social activities but also for vulnerable children in need of immediate support. The three (3) main services at the centre will be;

  1. A Sick Bay: A space for sick children to rest while being looked after by our volunteers at day time instead of being left in their homes alone without help.

  2.  A Library: This will provide access to developmental books to disadvantaged children and a space to host volunteers (teachers) who will provide extra support to children performing poorly in school.

  3.  Counselling: We would love to provide psychosocial support to children who have experienced traumatic experiences.

Christmas Gifts

=============

It is also our yearly ritual to present Christmas gifts of food, clothes and other household goods to orphaned children in Northern Uganda during the festive seasons. We want the kids to celebrate the festive season just like everyone else.  Last Christmas, our volunteers visited families in their homes on Christmas Eve with different gifts and we are looking forward to giving more surprises to child-headed families this year.
